Replace Fuel Filter
What does the fuel filter do?
Why should I replace my fuel filter?
How Much does it cost to replace my fuel filter?
These are good questions to ask because most people do not know.
The fuel filter cleans the fuel of particles and debris that could enter the fuel system through the fuel tank. Typically between 30,000 and 60,000 miles the fuel filter will have reached it’s filtering capacity or has begun to rust out to the point it may not be easily removed from the vehicle.
If the fuel filter is not replaced sooner than this mileage debris will flow up into the fuel rail and fuel injectors resulting in plugged or restricted fuel injectors or fuel rail and fuel pressure issues. Also the back pressure created by the restricted fuel filter will begin to cause damage to your very expensive fuel pump. Resulting in a typical repair costing you near $1000 on average not counting the cost of fuel injection cleaning or injector replacement down the road should these parts start to fail.
Rust and corrosion can also be an issue in areas with a lot of water or salt in the air or on the roads. If the filter can not be removed because of rust or corrosion the fuel lines will need to be replaced. Worse yet we have seen fuel filters that rust so badly they actually leak out from the side of the filter causing a massive fuel leak under the vehicle.
On average fuel filters that are located externally on the vehicle will cost you around $80 to replace every 3-5 years. Some are as high as $200. If the fuel filter is located inside of the fuel tank then unfortunately you will have no choice but to wait until the fuel pump fails to replace the fuel filter.
