Change Transfer Case Fluid
Transfer cases have fluid that needs to be drained out and changed regularly.
Transfer cases can be found on vehicles that are 4 wheel drive(4×4)
and all wheel drive (AWD) only.
Since their are so many different fluids that these transfer cases require it is highly recommended you go to a shop that has the ability to look up the factory recommended fluid
that should be put back in the transfer case. You do not want the wrong fluid to put back into your transfer case.
Often times the dealer will change or update the fluid specifications for these vehicles over time.
If the wrong fluid is installed it can be drained out without too much damage if done right away.
The fluid should be changed every 30,000-60,000 miles. Changing the transfer case fluid will keep your transfer case gears and bearings to operating smoothly and eliminate wear on the gears and bearings that take the abuse of our daily driving.
How much does it cost to replace my transfer case fluid?
Typically the cost is around $80 and can be as much as $150 depending on how much fluid the transfer case holds and what type of fluid is required. Whenever possible only use full synthetic fluids to fill the transfer case. This will eliminate wear and tear and save fuel economy.
