Change Standard Transmission Fluid- Clutch Fluid

Manual transmission vehicles have fluid that needs to be drained out and changed regularly. These vehicles can not be flushed like an automatic transmission so don’t let anyone fool you into paying for a $100 flush!

Since their are so many different fluids that these transmissions require it is highly recommended you go to a shop that has the ability to look up the factory recommended fluid that should be put back in the transmission. You do not want the wrong fluid to put back into your manual transmission.

Often times the dealer will change or update the fluid specifications for these vehicles over time.
If the wrong fluid is installed it can be drained out without too much damage if done right away.

The fluid should be changed every 30,000-60,000 miles. Changing the manual transmission fluid will keep your transmission shifting smoothly and eliminate wear on the gears and synchronizers that take the abuse of our daily driving.

Brake Fluid- Hydraulic Fluid

The manual transmission of your vehicle also contains other parts such as the clutch, clutch master cylinder and clutch slave cylinder. The latter two have a fluid in them that allows you to push down on the clutch pedal and have the vehicle shift. Most of the vehicles on the road today use ordinary brake fluid in this system.

Just like you flush the brake fluid out and clean the brake system every 60,000 miles, you should also change the fluid in the clutch hydraulic system. This will keep the seals in the master cylinder and slave cylinder from leaking and failing. If the clutch slave cylinder fails in most vehicles today the entire transmission has to be removed for repair. This results in a very expensive repair that could have been avoided by a little preventative maintenance.
